Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) often seem complex, but they are quite straightforward. Yes, you read that right! Applying for IPOs is more accessible than ever, especially with modern online tools. If you want to apply for an IPO, here is what you should know to make the process easier.

    Understanding IPO

An IPO is the process through which a privately held company becomes publicly traded. One benefit of going public through an IPO is the ability to tap into funding from a wide pool of investors.

This access to capital can simplify acquisition deals through share swaps and enhance the company’s visibility, reputation, and market presence, ultimately boosting sales and profitability.

India has taken the lead in the IPO market with 268 deals in 2024, showcasing the country’s increasing economic strength and growth.

The Recent Trends on IPO Investments

As of December 31, 2024, India’s IPO market has emerged as a global leader, accounting for approximately 25% of all global IPOs with 327 IPOs launched. This rise is due to strong retail involvement, making up nearly half of all subscriptions, showing increased investor trust.

The total funds raised reached USD 11.2 billion, more than doubling from USD 5.5 billion in 2023. Above all, the average return on IPOs was around 37.1%, outperforming many emerging markets and showcasing robust growth across sectors such as technology and renewable energy.

SEBI’s strict rules and regulations have increased market clarity and safety for investors, making IPOs more appealing to both companies and investors.

Making the IPO Application Process Simpler

The days of complicated IPO forms are over. Now, digital platforms let retail investors apply IPO online with ease. Here is a breakdown:

    1.    Select a Reliable Broker:

Select a broker who provides user-friendly platforms and IPO services. Make sure they provide customer service for any questions.

    2.    Demat Account and KYC Setup:

Connect your bank and account for simple transactions. This assures that your shares are kept in your Demat account securely.

    3.    Read the Prospectus:

Understand the company’s business model, financials, and risks. This booklet offers crucial information for well-informed decision-making.

    4.    Place Your Bid:

Choose your lot size and bid within the defined price range. Oversubscription may result in a lottery-based allotment.

    5.    Allotment and Refunds:

If your bid is unsuccessful, refunds are processed quickly, generally within a few days.

Key Considerations for Understanding an IPO

Before applying, it is important to know the company behind the IPO. Look for:

    • Financial Health: Review the prospectus for balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow.
    • Valuation: Make sure the price reflects the company’s growth prospects compared to competitors.
    • Market Sentiment: Understand how the industry and market conditions affect the IPO.

    Why Make an IPO Investment?

Investing in IPOs can be a rewarding way to invest in stocks, offering several advantages:

    • Growth Potential: IPOs often involve companies with strong growth trajectories.
    • Early Access: You get in before the stock starts trading in the open market.
    • Long-term Benefits: IPOs can result in considerable long-term gains as the firm grows.

Not all IPOs will be successful; some can be hyped and fall short of expectations. When choosing to invest in shares, it is critical to carry out in-depth research to figure out the challenges and stay clear of overhyped prospects.

    The Bottom Line

When a company goes public through an IPO, it marks a significant milestone, transitioning from private to public ownership. Moreover, the funds raised help with growth, repaying early investors or debts, and investing in areas like research. With proper research, you can invest in the stock market and build a diverse portfolio for the future.
